In my research I found no studies that focused just on the two NRTs of nicotine patch or gum.  However, I did find several meta-analysis reviews comparing the efficacy of the four most common NRTs; nicotine patch, gum, nasal spray, and inhaler.  Each study consistently came up with the same conclusions.  No significant difference in abstinence rates was found for any of the four NRTs and all four were effective in achieving abstinence at a 6-12 month follow-up period.  No one type of NRT is best suited for everyone, but if used properly then very similar results may be realized.
